Camp Pendleton maintains tradition as it prepares Marines for tomorrow's battles.
Camp Pendleton's wartime role as an engine for training and sending units and replaements to the Pacific Theater shifted into reverse following the Japanese surrender on 2 September 1945. It became a processing center for war-weary Marines returning home, most of whom would soon re-enter civilian life.

Ready to Fight by Col. Richard B. Rothwell, USMC (Ret)
"First to Fight!" is a hard-earned, respected Marine Corps motto. Surprisingly, that agressive spirit was not evident in the events leading to its acquisition of Camp Pendleton. "Tail End Charlie" would be more descriptive. Had it not been for a fortuitous decision by the U.S. Army, the world's largest amphibious training base might have become the home of an armored division.

Historic Pendleton by Anne Estes
This year Camp Pendleton, Ca. celebrates its 65th birthday as a United States Marine Corps Base. Tens of thousansd of Marines have trained here for missions all over the world. Every fourth grader in California is required to learn about its early history, and some are fortunate enough to live near the base and its historic sites.
